Prior to this, he was General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union from 1985 to 1991. Apart from this, he held many important positions. From 1988 to 1989 he was the chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet. From 1988 to 1991, he was the state country chief. From 1989 to 1990 he served as chairman of the Supreme Soviet.

Some believe that the disintegration of Soviet Russia could have been prevented if Gorbachev, who came to power in 1985, had made more strenuous efforts to modernize a government-controlled economy by reining in the political system.

After the breakup of the Soviet Union, Gorbachev again contested elections in Russia, but he had to face a tremendous defeat. He finished seventh in the presidential election. In later days he became a fierce critic of Vladimir Putin.
